As with just about any bar area that caters for ferang visitors and ex-pats, the one consistent feature is change. Bars come and go, with some lasting just a few months while others go on for years until the owners gets bored or decides to do something different.
One of the most recent changes is at the Scotsman Bar in the Day & Night in Udon Thani. Ian, the former 'landlord' has decided to move on to do something else, and what was a quieter retreat for the ex-pat contingent, a place to sit with a drink and not be disturbed by the working girls and getting stung for lady drinks, has now reverted in to a full-blown girly bar. I have known the girls that work here for some time, and I can't that I am particularly impressed with the change or the girls that work here, as they are seem to be a bit 'stuck up', or at worst, truly 'love themselves'. On the outside they are pleasant enough, but a bit too young for my liking.
The ex-pats that used to congregate here seem to have been scattered to the four winds, and it is becoming increasingly rare to see any of these guys these days. It's going to come as a bit of a surprise to the visitors who used to enjoy this bar, as they are going to find it almost unrecognisable in the coming months.
My most recent visit to the Day & Night complex was just this weekend (Friday 26th December). I have seen the place busier in past years and the number of girls seemed to be a bit thin on the ground, but the music banging out tried to make up for the lack of atmosphere with at least three bars competing to make the most impact. I couldn't bear it for much more than an hour and had to move on to somewhere a little quieter, and somewhere with some girls hanging around who might love a ferang more than themselves.
A new bar appeared on the Sampanthamit Road a few months ago, just a short way from the Day & Night called the Flamingo Bar. I have walked past this bar on many occasions and I am beginning to feel a little sorry for them, as there are barely any people going in for a drink. Just what the reason for this is, I am not sure but maybe next time I will go in and see what it is like, and see if there is something wrong with the girls. I will report back next month.
