Udon Thani
There is no one reason why people flock to Thailand but whatever the reason is, it is very rare that anyone goes back home feeling disappointed with the country or more specifically, their holiday. Many people think, when you mention Thailand, is the stereotypical foreign visitor looking for young ladies for sex, and while in many of cases that is very true, many others come here for the culture, food, fantastic beaches, quiet island holidays, water sports and exceptional scuba diving or snorkeling opportunities (although none of those are in Udon Thani).
I would guess for a first visit to Thailand, most people plan a short stay in Bangkok to see the normal tourist sights and then move on to another destination for the next leg of their holiday, with most heading south to destination such as Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui, Phi Phi Island etc.
A good number of people however elect to head north to see something other than the amazing beaches and crystal clear waters, by making trips to Chiang Mai in the north west, or Udon Thani in the north east. Both destinations can be rewarding, depending on what you are looking for from your visit.
From my experience of Bangkok, unless you are there only for the girls, the short stay option is probably best as the heat and pollution created by seriously dense traffic congestion can be just a little too much. To this end, package holidays are not terribly common for a holiday in Bangkok and you are pretty much on your own to arrange flights and hotels but this is easy enough as their are so many hotels in the country.
If you are visiting Thailand for the girls, a great option is to head for Bangkok or Pattaya, find the girl you want to be with and take her to one of the islands for holiday with you. She will treat you like a king and have the holiday of your life!

Getting to Udon Thani by Bus
Bus routes from Bangkok and the south to Udon Thani are very popular, despite the length of the journey. As they are popular, you are advised to book your tickets in advance to ensure you get a seat on the bus you want. The new online booking service covers most of the national bus routes, although many local services are not yet included. It is also hoped in time that the train service will become available to book online, but as of today they unfortunately are not.
