Last week, we made our monthly visit to Makro, to stock up on some ferang food (one of the better places to find it), and while there, decided to also stock up on some Leo beer, just one box would do the job for now.
We went round the store, as normal, pilling the trolley to capacity and headed for the checkout - complete with 1 box of 12 bottles of Leo. The girls scanning the goodies then told us we could not buy the beer until 5pm, apparently you cannot buy alcohol between 11am - 5pm (certainly not in most shops). Being a ferang, I challenged her and asked why, something they are not that used to. Via the wife, she replied with this the store alcohol policy, and in particular the hours when they will and will not sell. So, again I asked - why?
I think at this point, to my utter amazement, the checkout girl then said that I could buy 2 boxes of Leo (24 bottles) right now, but still could not allow just one box!
If anyone can explain this logic to me, I would be forever indebted!
I am well aware as to why there is a policy in place to not sell at certain times of the day, as there has been, and still is a problem with alcohol in Thailand but why is the policy so flexible?
Just one of the many crazy things that us ferang just cannot get our heads round, and like the Thai's we just have to shrug our shoulders and get on with our life.
