Songkran
Songkran is an annual water festival where the locals and ferang alike can become bigger children for three days! The festival on the streets consists of throwing water an anyone and anything within reach! Street vendors and police are left alone but few others can escape, and it is great fun.
The festival takes place over the 2nd weekend in April, beginning on Saturday. In 2014, the songkran festival should begin on 12th April.
We typically start at about 11am although if you venture out anytime after day light you are going to get a soaking or two. In Udon Thani it begins to liven up around 1pm, after they have all fed themselves.

Although still tremendous fun, the Songkran festival does appear to have been a little quieter in the last couple of years but those that do take part, do their level best to make up for those that do not. If you want to see water fight madness for a longer period, try the festival in Pattaya, as it typically continues for the best part of a week (if you can manage of full week of water mayhem).
Songkran 2014
I can honestly say that I can not imagine this type of fun lasting for a full day, let alone 3 or more days, back in England! Why is it, the Thai's can drink all day and not get aggressive, but so many of my 'brothers' back in the UK cannot?
If you can make a visit during the Songkran festival in Udon Thani, then I would urge you to get as involved as you can, because the more you indulge, the more you will enjoy it - I promise. The locals will love you for it, and you will get a lot of attention, as well as become a prime target for the water to be aimed at. A ferang is not quite a prized target as there is a good number of us here in Udon Thani, but all us ferang are targets, and you can see this as their eyes light up as they approach you, and an evil little smile often appears on the face.
I must confess, I do the same, in as much I select certain targets above others. The young kids really do appreciate a water fight with a ferang, and really get quite enthusiastic about it. Young teenage girls certainly do like the attention from a ferang male, and the older generation (male and female), are just as enthusiastic as the kids!
