Land and Housing in Udon Thani
Owning land and property is common-place for ferang with a Thai wife, although the deeds for the land are never solely in the name of the ferang. Technically the wife owns the land and house, although through marriage it is supposed to be a 50/50 split. However, through a Thai court, it may or may not prove to be the case. Thankfully it is not something I have had to test out, and to date I have not met a ferang who has needed the courts or lawyers to help in their interests.
Land Purchases in Udon Thani
Land purchases in Udon Thani (and all of Thailand) is something done under the careful watch of the government, where all the records of deed titles and transfer of titles is kept. All monies exchanged are between the selling and buying party, except for the governments tax, which the buyer is typically expected to pay in the case of a ferang buying from a Thai.
The process is so simple and quick, and can be done in a matter of days. Once you agree a price with the seller, you get the cash, meet at the local government building, go in and do the transfer - 30 minutes to perhaps 2 hours if it is a busy day. To think that back in the UK this takes weeks, with lawyers creaming their money off the top.
