Living in Udon Thani and Thailand
Life in Udon Thani, Thailand (or indeed living in Thailand in general) is what you make it, if you can keep a positive outlook you will survive pretty well but if you think negatively more often than not then you will perhaps start to question why you are here. Just every aspect of life here is different to what us ferang has become accustomed to, from school to how the country is run. There are many aspects to life here that seem to make little sense based on what I grew up with but ultimately you have to accept that what they do is what they do and it is not likely to change in a hurry.
This website is based on my life in the North East corner of Thailand - a guide to life and living as an expat in Udon Thani. I live just outside Udon Thani which is in the Issan region. It is a very poor area where rice and animal farming seem to be the main sources of income for many of the people but most barely make enough money to look after themselves very well. Life my be different in other parts of the country but as I have no experience of those other areas I cannot comment on them so please bare in mind - this is mostly about life in Issan but there are aspects that are probably a nationwide thing too!
One of the major pulls of Thailand is of course the sex that is on offer in almost any built up area of the country, and Udon Thani is no different, There are plenty of bars and bar girls is that is what you want but it is not on the same scale as the major bar locations in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya.
One thing, above all else I have formed an opinion on is, the people and their way of thinking just about equate to the Thai language - it hasn't changed for centuries! and there are so many examples throughout this website to demonstrate why I believe that.
While I said above that most people are poor it should be pointed out that they always seem to find money to buy Thai whiskey of beer for a party, and they love to party! I must confess their parties can be a lot of fun but made a little harder if you do not understand the language. I would also point out that most teenagers have modern mobile phones so there must be some money somewhere.
